Photography and its inherent properties (light, lens, image)
is the primary medium of some artists. Others use photography as a tool,
picking up a camera when it suits the conceptual and material needs of their
ideas. The images included tell us as much about the medium of photography—its role in our lives and the possibilities it presents for
art-making — as they tell us about the people, objects and moments they
represent.
- Risa Puleo, Curator
FotoFest and Houston Center for Photography (HCP) join together in a first-ever exhibition collaboration to commission and present a new show of emerging Texas photographic artists. The organizations have commissioned Arturo Palacios (Director, Art Palace, Austin) and Risa Puleo (Assistant Curator of American and Contemporary Art, Blanton Museum of Art, Austin) to co-curate the exhibit, the third the Talent in Texas series. The exhibit is presented in both spaces – FotoFest Headquarters Downtown and Houston Center for Photography in the Museum District.
VIEWFINDER explores the wide scope of photographic art practice today from traditional film-based still photography to video and installation work and features 15 artists from 11 Texas cities - from Beaumont to El Paso and Lubbock to Laredo:
