Marla Sweeney is known for her intimate portraits of people in public settings. Her work is characterized by an intimate, unstaged approach to photography. Her portraits are of people she does not know, whom she photographs, in her words, “as [she] find[s] them.” Her work is included in numerous museum collections, including the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston; Musee da la Photographie, Charleroi, Belgium; Museu da Imagem, Braga, Portugal; and the Harry Ransom Center Collection, University of Texas, Austin. Most recently she has exhibited at Galleri Image in Aarhus, Denmark and Yossi Milo gallery in New York. Sweeney holds an M.F.A. in photography from the State University of New York at New Paltz. Born in 1969 in Lowell, Massachusetts, Sweeney resides and works in upstate New York.
