FotoFest 2006
FotoFest will be announcing the theme of the upcoming 11th International Biennial Month of Photography – FotoFest 2006, via email at the end of October. If you are not already receiving email updates and the FotoFest Newsletter, please join our email list by clicking here

Several possible themes are being discussed by FotoFest Artistic Directors and Founders Wendy Watriss and Fred Baldwin, along with the FotoFest Art Board, staff and international advisors.

FotoFest Announces Fall Exhibition
Currently, FotoFest is assembling an exhibition of work by emerging Texas artists planned for late October 2004. The exhibition will feature 6 - 8 artists working in photographic and mixed media.

Currently being considered for the exhibition is a group of young and talented Houston and Dallas-based artists. Their work runs the gamut of straight photography to installation and video work. With Artistic Director Wendy Watriss and the FotoFest Art Board, FotoFest Exhibitions Coordinator Jennifer Ward, a graduate of the University of North Texas in Denton, is talking with Texas curators, gallery directors and artists to gather work for the exhibit.

"FotoFest is known for its international and national programming, but we also have a strong interest in the work of Texas-based artists. Between Biennials, we program one to two shows focusing on work being done in Texas. This show is shaping up to have a focus on Houston and Dallas-based artists moving between straight and mixed-media work, which often takes an oblique and ironic look at contemporary society and the language of vernacular objects." - Artistic Director Wendy Watriss.

Final details and a list of artists will be announced soon.

FotoFest Travels to Holland
FotoFest Artistic Directors Wendy Watriss and Fred Baldwin and Exhibitions Coordinator Jennifer Ward traveled to the Netherlands earlier this month to see the Arab photography exhibitions organized by the 2004 Noorderlicht Photography Festival in Leeuwarden. The 14th edition of this annual festival focused on the Arab world with photographs by both Arab and Western photographers along with an exhibition of historical photographs from the region. The program, titled Nazar - Arabic for seeing, insight, reflection, features more than 900 contemporary and historic photographs, the contributions of more than 25 Arab photographers, in one of the largest exhibitions of its kind in the West.

"The Noorderlicht Photography Festival organizers are to be congratulated for this work, which focuses on such an important and still relatively little known part of the photographic world," says Fred Baldwin. The exhibits are on display in Leuuwarden until October 24, 2004.

FotoFest in Bratislava and at Paris Photo
FotoFest will participate in the portfolio reviews of this fall's Bratislava Month of Photography in Bratislava, Slovakia. This year, the festival is collaborating with organizations in Vienna, Austria.

Encouraging collectors to see a broad range of international contemporary photography and new photographic centers in Paris, FotoFest will take a group of FotoFest Board members and collectors for a special tour of Paris Photo 2004 and other exhibitions in November.
