FotoFest 2006 FotoFest
announces the dual themes for FotoFest 2006 – The
Eleventh International Biennial of Photography and
Photo-Related Art.
• The Earth
• Artists Responding to Violence
The Earth The broad theme of Earth is an
extension of FotoFest 2004 and the focus on Water. The
combination of art, science, and public policy through art
installations and forums is a direction that FotoFest is
continuing. In keeping this theme broad, FotoFest is looking
at work that relates to Earth both metaphorically and
figuratively. It can encompass human and non-human life in a
broad existential sense as well as issues of land use and
geophysical history. We are looking at Energy as an important
part of Earth systems.
Artists Responding to Violence This is a
separate but related theme to that of Earth. The capacity of
human society to inflict violence upon itself and the Earth is
expanding with the ever increasing spread of technology. In
exploring and confronting this theme, FotoFest is not focusing
on depiction of violent acts but rather on how creative
artists interpret acts of violence and the human capacity for
violence in all aspects of life.
If you are interested in submitting work, please see the
newly revised FotoFest 2006 Submission Guidelines. Please do not submit
work before reading these guidelines. |

Home and Garden - Fall
Exhibition Home and
Garden, a newly created exhibition of Texas-based
artists, is an oblique, often humorous and macabre look at
family life and vernacular culture in the U.S.
The exhibition opens Friday, November 19, 2004, 7–10 pm at
FotoFest’s Headquarters in Vine Street Studios, downtown
Houston. The exhibit continues through Saturday, February 5,
2005. The exhibition will be accompanied by artist talks,
panel discussions and other programming to be announced later.
“We have a strong interest in the work of Texas-based
artists and between Biennials we create one to two shows
focusing on current work being done in Texas. This show
focuses on younger artists who take an ironic look at popular
culture, family life, and the language of vernacular
objects," says FotoFest Artistic Director Wendy
Watriss.
Home and Garden presents eight younger and
emerging Houston and Dallas-based artists: Colleen Graves,
Michele Grinstead, Stephanie Martz, Marc Montoya, Sarah
Greene Reed, Julie Ross, Lizzy Wetzel, and Anderson
Wrangle.
The artists work in traditional photographic processes and
mixed-media. The work includes Polaroids, sculpture
installations, drawing, print-making, and digital collages.
