NAZAR - Photographs from the Arab World, one of the largest exhibitions of photography from the Arab World of the Middle East and North Africa will open at FotoFest Friday, April 8 at their Downtown Gallery-Headquarters in Houston.
Among its many meanings, the Arabic word NAZAR means 'seeing' or 'insight'. The exhibit is a journey through many countries and many ways of seeing.
Eighteen Arab photographers and seventeen photographers from Europe, the U.S., Australia, Iran, and Israel have work in this exhibition. (Artist List)
The exhibition will present 250 photographic works, most of which have never been seen before in the United States. The exhibition is being brought by FotoFest from the Noorderlicht Photofestival in The Netherlands.
Bringing the show to the United States is a collaboration between two internationally well-known photography organizations – FotoFest International in Houston, Texas and the Aperture Foundation in New York City. NAZAR will be exhibited in New York this Fall.
"This exhibition is dense, complex, and beautiful. Seen as a whole, these works do not allow for easy interpretation or the idea that there is a single truth or a single way of looking at this part of the world", says FotoFest Artistic Director Wendy Watriss.
A Look Back, an electronic presentation of historical work from Arab countries and archives, including the famous Fondation Arabe pour l’Image in Beirut and the Van Leo Studio archive, accompanies the contemporary work.
In its entirety, NAZAR is the largest show of photographic works in the United States about the Arab World(s) of the Middle East and North Africa, to date.
FotoFest is collaborating with the contemporary art space, The Station to present the Western Eyes portion of the exhibit, opening April 23 and overlapping with the Arab works, at The ArtCar Museum.
There will be forums, student tours, and artist talks connected with the exhibit. Dates and locations will be posted on this website in the comibng weeks.

Bayou Pics Series - Tapley Tributary
Registration for the second of three scheduled photographic walking tours of Buffalo Bayou is now open.
Saturday, April 9, 2005 – 1 – 4 pm
Space is limited to 15 people - $15
Pre-Registration required by Friday, April 8, 2005
In the late 1970s, Houston landscape architect Charles Tapley designed an innovative and inspiring site along Buffalo Bayou’s western sector that included a tributary, riparian plantings, and attractive granite steps and seating areas. After years of neglect and too many floods to count, the Buffalo Bayou Partnership has just completed the restoration of the landscape to reflect Tapley’s original vision.

FotoFun - Kids for Kids Raises Over $8,000
FotoFun - Kids for Kids, the fundraiser for FotoFest's Literacy Through Photography (LTP) program, took place at FotoFest Headquarters at Vine Street Studios this past Saturday, March 12, 2005 and raised over $8,000 for children in inner-city schools.
The Kids for Kids fundraiser was attended by over 120 parents and children who participated in activities that included a photographic scavenger hunt, collage and photogram stations, and a writing activity. The event's title highlights that FotoFun - Kids for Kids was an event where children helped other children.
LTP uses photography to improve students’ writing abilities, cognitive thinking and classroom communication skills in 44 inner city schools in Houston, serving more than 81 teachers and 2,000 students.
