Each year FotoFest creative directors visit festivals in France, Poland, Bratislava, Brazil, Portland and elsewhere around the world to meet artists and look at work. The International Discoveries exhibition is the product of these travels. Founders Wendy Watriss and Fred Baldwin, along with exhibitions Coordinator Jennifer Ward chose nine artists for the exhibition, representing some of the best work the have encountered recently in their travels. Artists include Roberto Fernández Ibáñez (Uruguay), Jesús Jiménez (Mexico/London), Diego Ranea (Argentina), Kelly Flynn (U.S.), John Chervinsky (U.S.), Lydia Panas (U.S.), Chan-Hyo Bae (South Korea), Przemyslaw Pokrycki (Poland), and Alessandra Sanguinetti (Argentina).

Chan-Hyo Bae's work reflects his feelings as an Asian immigrant in the West. Lydia Panas examines her family and community. Alessandra Sanguinetti profiles the relationship of two young children as they grow. Diego Ranea takes an unconventional view of landscapes. Kelly Flynn's ironic look at sexual iconography and gender roles is as serious as it is funny. Przemyslaw Pokrycki documents rituals from birth to death. John Chervinsky's scientific schemata reflect his career as a scientist and professor. Roberto Fernández Ibáñez addresses nature and the seasons through the pairing of haiku and equally poetic photographs. Jesús Jiménez plays for the camera. All of these artists shows serious attention to their subjects and a decidedly contemporary aesthetic.

The exhibition opens Thursday, October 25, 2007, 6-9pm with a reception at FotoFest Headquarters at Vine Street Studios, 1113 Vine St, Houston, Texas 77002. Artists Kelly Flynn, Roberto Fernández Ibáñez, Diego Ranea, and Lydia Panas will be in attendance.

FotoFest presents this exhibit as a fulfillment of their commitment to promote the exchange of art and ideas through programs that work globally and locally, bringing together an international vision of art and cross-cultural exchange.

FotoFest programs are known as platforms for ideas and discovery, combining museum-quality art with important social and aesthetic issues. FotoFest gives priority to the works of important but little-known photographic artists from the U.S. and around the world.
