The FotoFest Newsletter - September 2006

Curated by: Jennifer Ward & Vinod Hopson
October 12 - November 19, 2006
Opening: Thursday, October 12, 6 - 9pm

David Woody, Airmen, San Antonio, TX, 2005

Native Sons is a new exhibition commissioned by FotoFest featuring work by six Texas-based artists; Sterling Allen (Austin), Chuy Benitez ( Houston), Young-Min Kang (Houston), Max Kazemzadeh (Dallas), Brian Piana (Houston), and David Woody (Austin).

Native Sons takes an ironic, often humorous look at contemporary life in the Lone Star State. The exhibition presents very diverse photo-based work by the six artists. While their works are all photo-related, they run the gamut from traditional photography to drawing and painting, installation and digital production.

It’s part of FotoFest’s mission to look at art locally and globally. We think a focus on things close to home gives us new perspectives and hopefully places Texas artists on an international stage,” say co-curators Jennifer Ward and Vinod Hopson. “We are interested in what is going on around us. We have watched several of the artists in this show for years and have followed their development.”

Ms Ward, FotoFest Exhibitions Coordinator and co-curator of 2004's Home & Garden, the first TALENT IN TEXAS show, is a native Texan whose Czech roots lie in cities like Shiner, San Antonio and the Texas Hill Country. Mr. Hopson, a self-described Yankee now working at DiverseWorks Artspace, was born and raised in New Jersey before moving to Texas in 1996. Together they bring an insider and outsider view to the exhibition. “It is our shared vision and love for the state and its people that inspire this show,” they note.

Native Sons opening reception will feature music from the Honky Tonk Heroes and food by Tacos a Go-Go. The exhibit is open to the public, free of charge, Monday – Friday, 10am – 5pm; Saturday, noon - 6pm, from October 12, 2006 through November 19, 2006 at FotoFest Headquarters at Vine Street Studios, 1113 Vine Street, Houston, Texas. Thirty international curators and writers, invited by FotoFest, are participating in the Meeting Place FotoFest Beijing portfolio review for Chinese photographers October 23-27, 2006.

This event is the first of its kind in China. FotoFest was invited to replicate its portfolio review program, the Meeting Place, in Beijing by the Chinese organizers who observed the Meeting Place at FOTOFEST2006.

The organizers, Lei Gao, Jimmy Chu and Suschi Si have raised substantial funding from Hewlett Packard China and support from Chinese media, particularly China Photography Magazine. The reviewers represent museums, commercial galleries, top photographers’ agencies, and book publishers from both the U.S. and Europe. More than 200 Chinese photographers have been selected to participate so far.

FotoFest’s artistic directors and the Chinese organizers anticipate that the Meeting Place FotoFest Beijing will create major opportunities for the Chinese photographers who have been selected and will open a door to the West that has been heretofore been unavailable to them in China.
