These images are appropriated from large collections of 35mm slides purchased at estate and garage sales. The process involves projecting the slides and then rephotographing parts of the projected image. In relation to their original context, these images are deceitful. By removing a piece of the whole and setting it apart as an object of contemplation, I am exploring the way these images reveal an open-ended, fictitious narrative. The way we complete this narrative reveals a subconscious critique of our true character. Unlike the artifact, these images transcend their role as documentation of a particular people at a particular place and time. By combining this critical narrative with the cinematic qualities of a snapshot, the pictures speak to the musical whimsy and irony of fables and fairy-tales.
