2010 Discoveries of the Meeting Place

After each Biennial, FotoFest asks ten reviewers from that year's Meeting Place portfolio reviews to select one artist whose work she/he considers to be a particularly interesting “discovery.”  The reviewers are selected on the basis of their diverse perspectives, institutions, experience and geographic origins. The ten artists selected for the FOTOFEST Biennial 2010 Discoveries of the Meeting Place exhibition in March 2010 have been selected by reviewers from the United States, England, Germany and Switzerland.

FotoFest inaugurated the first Discoveries of the Meeting Place exhibition at the FOTOFEST Biennial 1996 in Houston, ten years after the first Biennial in 1986. The seven previous Discoveries of the Meeting Place exhibitions have helped the rise of many photographic careers.

The invited curators are a distinguished group of  curators. They were selected to be Meeting Place reviewers because they are knowledgeable and experienced in the field of contemporary art and photography. For the Discoveries exhibition, each curator prepares a curatorial statement to be published in the FOTOFEST Biennial 2010 catalogue and included in the exhibition alongside the images of the artists they have selected.

Previous Discoveries exhibitions have traveled to Russia, Brazil and Mexico. Like the Meeting Place itself, they are an important launching pad for talented people seeking new opportunities to show and expand their artwork.

Like the Biennial itself, the Meeting Place and the Discoveries exhibitions are designed to be a platform for discovery and talent -  creating new opportunities for artists and promoting creative energy.
