From Traditional Publishing to Print-on-Demand

FOTOFEST2008 Educational Seminar Coordinated by Darius Himes and Mary Virginia Swanson for FotoFest

One of the most effective marketing tools that artists can use to reach their audiences is a book of their work. Whether the publication takes the format of a well- crafted, limited edition artist book, or a book that utilizes the growing "print on demand" industry, or a publication with traditional publishers, books serve as important markers in one's career as an artist.

This one-day seminar offered artists an inside look at the options available in photo book publishing today and how to take advantage of these tools. Industry professionals gave presentations on many aspects of today's publishing industry, printing on demand, handmade artist books, and case studies of successful book making ventures. Artists and editors shared their experiences with limited edition books as well as more traditional publishing opportunities.
