Report on FOTOFEST2008 - March 7 - April 20
PART II - The FotoFest Catalogue
One of the most important records that FotoFest leaves is its catalogues. This year we Published, two catalogues in a set. One 208 page catalogue was devoted to the exhibitions that were curated or co-curated by FotoFest and contained a comprehensive description of the work done by Chinese photographers and artists. The other companion piece is a 264page catalogue that highlights the work represented by the 80 museums, galleries, and non profit art spaces that participated in the 2008 FotoFest. Some of the exhibits were about China but there were many other themes as well represented in the Participating Spaces Catalogue, including work from FotoFest's own Literacy Through Photography program as well Selections from the Meeting Place, film collaboration with the Museum of Fine Arts Houston.
The production the catalogue is a six day and night ordeal that is shared by our New York based designer, Henk van Assen, Wendy Watriss and Jim Walker of Earth Color Printing on this particular night. The printing is checked about every hour and a half.
Wendy and Henk check the presses (above). Jennifer Ward, FotoFest's Exhibitions Coordinator, pulls her shift at the Earth Color printing plant. She is checking catalogue text with Henk van Assen.
Four a.m. on the fourth day/night begins to blur the calendar. Wendy gets her turn on the sofa and the catalogue after six days begins to go to bed at the bindery.
