Artist Statement These images are photographs of wads and windings of human hair. The project began one day after discovering one particular clump alighting (say perched) underneath a lamp. Seen from a particular angle, and with an anchoring shadow, the “sculpture” took on insect-like qualities. I began collecting the objects as an exercise in mock classification—a desire to order and identify this newfound world. The creatures spring from the guileless and haphazard habits of my wife who draws loose hair from her head and binds them together. The final work behaves like a subtle drawing—a kind of automatic writing. The “bugs” are found objects and enjoy their existence in dada or imagination.
