Artist Statement
Born in socialistic Czechoslovakia, turning to teenager in time of Velvet Revolution, I was raised up in time of transition between two Ages, “the late Cold War Age” and “the Post - Cold War/ Information Highway Age”. At the age of 30, I've traced back my memories to compare and contrast two Eras. Through the Research I identified myself within Generation "Cold Y" *. Transformations left marks in everyone, and for "us" amounted to abundant amount of possibilities and choices, which eventually caused confusion as well as new hope.
During the transformation process from socialistic Czechoslovakia to nowadays Slovakia, my life passed from childhood to young age. Sweet recollections of happy childhood bittered by unknown fears of parents flashing to present in 3 locations in the heart of Slovakia connected to my past. Portraited changes are matted in the coal factory Cigel, the wooden village Cicmany and the nature-rich hills of Orava. Pride of Socialismus, over employed factories and plants were transformed into death silence rusted mementos embraced by forgiving nature. Unemployment forcing people to abandon home turned lively colorful remote villages and houses into the ruins slowly eaten by ravages of time. Hundreds years of traditions still finding the way to endure up the hills in the north of Slovakia.
