Artist Statement
My images are a different approach to seeing. They challenge and transform our notion of human perception and perspective. Selections of my color work are represented first on the enclosed disc so I will begin my discourse with them. Initially we recognize these pictures as landscapes but the visual vocabulary is different and somewhat disorienting. Viewers don’t have the schema for what they are seeing. The rule system has changed - sky is water, clouds are weeds, dust storms are suspended debris tangled in roots, birds are turtles, deep is shallow, tall is short, weeds and bubbles are ice. It all doesn’t quite compute. There is mystery and excitement as unique underwater worlds are discovered.

The black and white pictures that I am submitting challenge and transform human perception in a very different way. The viewer believes that the photographer was there to bear witness to the multitude of hammerhead sharks passing by. We know these are photographs not drawings. But these are not the slicked up pictures of sharks that you would see in a scuba magazine. Why? Our feeling towards these animals comes from deep within our most primitive selves. These are ancient creatures and their essence is primordial. Rather then polished, the image rendering is kindred to that of cave paintings.
Our reaction to the prints draws from the root, base, lizard brain of image making.

As for process, all color images are pigment prints and all black and white photos are carbon pigment prints. All photographs are made on Hahnemuhle Photo Rag. Each image is printed to approx. 25” x 37” and is window matted with an 8 ply board to 34” x 46”. In the submission guidelines we are asked to include our preferences for where we would like to exhibit. As I look through the 2006 participating spaces I see many interesting options. I would like to be considered by all types of spaces with the exceptions of locations such as spas/salons, restaurants/cafes, and stores (clothing) etc.
