An extraordinary selection of photographic art from over 80 of the world's best-known and most talented working artists from Europe, Asia, the U.S., Latin America, South America, Canada, and Australia.

Over 400 people filled the ballroom of the Doubletree Hotel Downtown for the FOTOFEST2008 Fine Print Auction in Houston. It was an evening of high energy and excitement. Everyone talked about the remarkable quality of the photographs and the high-spirited bidding.

All 36 of the Auction tables were sponsored, and they were filled with guests and artists. All 86 prints sold and the average price was 42% higher than the previous Fine Print Auction in 2006.

Houstonians welcomed photography enthusiasts from around the U.S., Europe, Asia and South America, including new collectors, Meeting Place curators and reviewers. Denise Bethel, Senior V.P. of Photography, Sotheby's, Inc., gave a fascinating overview of national collecting to Auction sponsors the night preceding the Live Auction. On the following night, she kept the bidding and rhythm of the Live Auction exciting and smooth.

Among very well-known artists featured in the 2008 Fine Print Auction are: Doug and Mike Starn, Lalla Essaydi; Luis González Palma, Graciela Sacco; Marc Riboud, Atta Kim, Chema Madoz, Thomas Kellner, and Marcos Lopez.

Bidders and buyers came from New York, Shanghai, Rio de Janeiro, Moscow, Berlin, Houston, Hamburg, Philadelphia, Frankfurt, Montevideo, Los Angeles, Santa Fe, Dallas, Durham, Tucson, Austin, Miami, San Antonio, and San Francisco. Carefully selected by FotoFest's founders and creative directors, the fine print donations were exceptional, generously given by a broad range of top contemporary artists. Each Fine Print Auction grows in quality, and FotoFest's 2008 Auction is the most successful to date, bringing in over $300,000 in print sales and table sponsorships.

The event sponsorships by the Doubletree Hotel Downtown, the principal sponsor of the Auction, and 42 Below vodka, the Houston Press and KUHF 88.7 FM gave the event extra quality and visibility. The popularity of 42 Below's specialty martinis made for very lively pre-auction discussions and viewing of prints.

Leading up to the Live Auction, FotoFest sponsored four preview events, including a 12-day preview exhibition at Gremillion & Co. Fine Art, a preview party at Bering & James, Inc., and a two-day preview exhibition at the Doubletree Hotel, as well as the on-line gallery and absentee bidding opportunities.

The 2008 Auction Chairperson, Karen Bering, was very important in making the whole event a success. With Auctioneer Denise Bethel, donating artists and galleries, Auction sponsors, individual supporters, volunteers, FotoFest Board of Directors and FotoFest Auction coordinator, Patti Stoddart, FotoFest's 2008 Auction was an exceptional event. FotoFest thanks everyone involved.

Revenues from the print sales and major sponsorships support FotoFest's Biennial and year-round art programs helping hundreds of artists around the world every year. Ticket sales and individual sponsorships support FotoFest's school-based Literacy Through Photography program working with over 1,000 students annually in the Houston area and beyond.
