The Meeting Place, FotoFest's portfolio review program for
photographers, is one of the biennial's most important and popular programs.
The twelve-day Meeting Place presents an unparalleled opportunity for
artists using photography to have their work seen by some of the most
important people in the field of photography. FotoFest brings photography
professionals - museum curators, gallery owners, magazine editors, and
representatives of photography agencies, collectors and publishers - from
around the world to meet with photographers and review their work.
The 2004 Meeting Place was held for twelve days, Friday, March 12 through Thursday March 25, 2004. There were three 4-day sessions with one break day between each session. These break days took place on Tuesday, March 16 and Sunday, March 21. On the break days FotoFest sponsored the Workshop "Strategies for Success in the Marketplace ".
Photographers were able to register at the Meeting Place for four or six days for one-on-one reviews with experts who can assist with exhibitions and publications and provide guidance for future career development. Photographers were guarantied a minimum of four reviews per day.
Reviewers at the Meeting Place have included curators from New York's Museum of Modern Art, The Whitney Museum, Guggenheim Museum, Bronx Museum of the Arts, and International Center for Photography; Friends of Photography and Camerawork in San Francisco; Los Angeles County Museum of Art; Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, and Houston Center for Photography; The Australian Centre for Photography; London's Victoria and Albert Museum and Autograph; Mexico City's Centro de la Imagen; Fotografie Forum, Frankfurt; Light Work in Syracuse, N.Y.; and the Musée de la Photographie à Charleroi, Belgium.
Editors have come from Aperture, American Photo, fotoMAGAZINE, The New York Times, Rolling Stone, European Photography, Photo Metro, PHOTONEWS, Leica World Magazine, and Camera Austria. Publishers have come from Dewi Lewis Publishing, Phaidon Press, and Prefix publishing. Directors of international photography festivals have come from Mois de la Photo in Paris, Barcelona's Primavera Fotográfica, PhotoEspaña in Madrid, Odense Foto Triennial in Denmark, Mexico City's FotoSeptiembre, and Encuentros Abiertos de Fotografia in Buenos Aires. Representatives of stock houses such as Image Bank and international photo agencies such as Magnum Photo, advertising firms, private dealers, commercial gallery owners and collectors have also reviewed portfolios for The International Meeting Place.
Meeting Place registrants were invited to opening festivities, exhibition receptions and other activities. There was a free evening shuttle available to registrants for these evening events. In addition to the formal portfolio reviews, there was plenty of time for informal networking and meetings with other photographers.
Upon arrival at the Meeting Place, registrants for the portfolio reviews were provided with a complimentary copy of FotoFest's Reviewer Bios to assist photographers in becoming familiar with participating portfolio reviewers.
The Meeting Place 2004 was accompanied by FotoFest's fifth Discoveries of the Meeting Place exhibit showcasing 10 photographers selected by reviewers who saw their work at the 2002 Meeting Place.
