When New York City created its water system in the 19th century, it sought to ensure a reliable supply in
order to sustain the city's growing population. The water system today is an extraordinary web of places - beautiful
landscapes, mysterious structures, and sites where the natural meets the man-made in enigmatic ways. These landscapes,
structures and sites, some old and some still under construction, are monumental and fragile at the same time.
