Nancy Newberry
Dallas, Texas

Dallas photographer Nancy Newberry is interested in the strange rituals of everyday life. Her most well-known series is about the Texas homecoming Mums. High school students in Texas uniquely wear this elaborate ribbon ornament, made with silk flowers and glittery trinkets, during homecoming football events. Exchanged between boyfriends and girlfriends, and connoting the wearer’s social standing and activities, the ritual object in this work embodies the overwhelming, engulfing, and hysterical experience of being a teenager.
