One of the ways that FotoFest promotes public interaction with photography and photographic artists is through collecting - encouraging people to become involved with collecting photography. FotoFest does this through a collectors program in Houston, First Look; special collectors’ evenings and trips outside Texas for patrons, collectors and FotoFest’s Board of Directors; and other special programs for new and established photography collectors.

First Look - FotoFest's Collector's Group
First Look is a collectors group created by FotoFest in 2006 to explore the world of photography and photo collecting. A membership program, First Look hosts five to six special, members-only events every year, including one regional trip outside Houston. Events include meetings with artists, visits to collectors’ homes, private print viewings at commercial art galleries, special visits to museum archives and collections, and members-only exhibition tours.

The educational aspects of the events are mixed with social networking and learning about collecting as a way to enjoy and engage in a wonderful art form. First Look events increase public involvement and appreciation for photography as an art form and expand awareness of other arts organizations in Texas and the city of Houston.

Annual memberships in First Look are $150 for individuals and $250 for couples. Membership in First Look helps support FotoFest’s art programs and artists from around the world.

Biennial Collector's Program
In 2012, FotoFest created a new Collector's Program for visiting collectors to the FotoFest Fine Print Auction. The three day program included a visit to the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston Print Collection, meetings with artists and tours of collector's homes.

National and International Art Trips
For the FotoFest Board of Directors, patrons and collectors, FotoFest organizes out-of-state and international excursions to meet artists, visit with curators at galleries and museums, and see private art collections. Past trips have included: Paris, France; Prague, Czech Republic; Buenos Aires, Argentina; Mexico City, Mexico; and New York City.
