Kurdistan in the Shadow of History - Paris
July 6, 2004
Report by Fred Baldwin

In November 1996, FotoFest created an exhibit with Susan Meiselas from her book Kurdistan: In the Shadow of History. Opening at Houston's Menil Collection, the exhibit continued to Impressions Gallery, York, UK; PhotoEspana, Madrid, Spain; Bellevue Art Museum, Seattle, Washington; Hellenic-American Union, Athens, Greece; Nederlands Foto Instituut; Museum of Ethnology, Hamburg, Germany; Cherbourg Festival of Photography, Cherbourg, France, and is currently closing its 8-year-tour at Hotel de Ville in Paris.

Attendance was reported to be brisk at the exhibition office. This arresting poster set in the hustle of the rue de Rivoli, one of the busiest streets in Paris, seemed to contrast the struggling people of Kurdistan, a nation that has never been a nation, with the busy self-absorbed life of a major Western city. How patient and long suffering these Kurds seem. That's what I was thinking about when I took this picture.
