Founder and Director
SocialDocumentary.net, Concord, MA, USA
Glenn Ruga is the Founder and Director of SocialDocumentary.net (SDN), began in 2008 as a global platform for documentary photography. He curated SDN's first exhibition at powerHouse Arena in New York in 2010 on the global recession. The fifth SDN exhibition will open at powerHouse Arena on February 27, 2014. Ruga has continued to curate exhibitions for SDN in New York and other locations.
In addition to SDN, Ruga is the consulting curator for 555 Gallery, a new photography gallery that opened in 2014 in Boston. He has participated in photography reviews at the Palm Springs Photo Festival, Reviews Santa Fe, the New England Portfolio Reviews, PDN, and others.
From 2010-2013, Ruga was the Executive Director of the Photographic Resource Center (PRC) at Boston University. While at the PRC, he curated numerous exhibitions including "Global Health in Focus" featuring work by Kristen Ashburn, Dominic Chavez, and David Rochkind. Ruga is also the former Publisher and Art Director of Loupe, the magazine of the PRC. (www.prcboston.org).
In 2012, Ruga was one of three curators of the New York Photo Festival where he curated three exhibitions including work by Bruce Davidson, Platon, and Eugene Richards, Reza, and Lori Grinker. (http://nyph.at/ruga/).
His strength in the photography community is the intersection of fine art and documentary and his career has followed a thin and blurry line between the two. He helps photographers develop a strong and focused vision in their work and while putting emphasis on the visual over conceptual elements. Much of the work he has exhibited and/or published has come from work he has been introduced to during portfolio reviews.
