Director of Photography
Umbrella Arts Gallery, New York, NY, USA
HARVEY STEIN is the Director of Photography at Umbrella Arts Gallery, located in New York City's historic East Village. Umbrella Arts specializes in painting and photography, and is committed to keeping the artistic spirit of the East Village alive as a place of discovery, movement and change, and has long championed under-represented individuals and groups. We present new talent in an intimate art space, where curatorial experimentation creates exhibitions and events that share the work of some of today's most interesting artists. Mr. Stein is responsible for finding artists, arranging, designing, and curating photography exhibits, books and events. Since 2009, when joining the gallery, he has curated sixteen shows, including one person, group and thematic exhibits developed by Mr. Stein. The gallery exhibits and sells contemporary photography that ranges from documentary to fine art imagery.
In addition to his duties at Umbrella Arts, Mr. Stein is a photographer, teacher, lecturer, and author of six books of photographs: Parallels: A Look at Twins (1978); Artists Observed (1986); Coney Island (1998); Movimento: Glimpses of Italian StreetLife (2007) and Coney Island 40 Years (2011). His newest book, Harlem Street Portraits, was just published in October 2013. He has had 76 one-person exhibits and has been in over 150 group shows in the U.S. and Europe, and his photographs are in more than 55 public and private collections around the world. He has taught at the International Center of Photography since the mid 1970's.
Mr. Stein is interested in seeing long-term projects, either completed or still in development and work that shows depth, creativity, and insight, suitable for gallery exhibition. He is looking for work to exhibit during late 2014 and 2015. He is open to seeing all kinds of imagery, except anything overtly commercial. He prefers seeing prints or books as opposed to screen-based photography.
