Charles Dee Mitchell
Freelance Writer and Curator
Dallas, Texas, USA
Charles Dee Mitchell is a freelance writer and curator based in Dallas, Texas. Over the years he has written extensively for the Dallas Morning News and Art in America, and has contributed to Artforum, the New Art Examiner, ArtSpace, and Glass Tire. His essays have accompanied exhibitions at the Dallas Museum of Art, the Columbus (Ohio) Museum of Art, the Armand Hammer Museum, and many university and commercial galleries.
Mr. Mitchell is retired from a 32 year career in the book trade, during which he worked with both specialty and trade publishers of art and photography books. Since retirement, he has curated exhibitions in Dallas, Houston, and Austin, Texas. His most recent curatorial project was the exhibition Engines of War at Klemens Gasser and Tanja Grunert Gallery in New York City.
Although he is interested in all photography that takes a creative approach to its subject matter, his major focus is on documentary work and photojournalism. He is not interested in fashion photography or traditional nudes. For photographers interested in publishing their work, he can advise them on shaping their material to get it ready for publication and suggest appropriate publishers for them. As a writer, collector, and curator he has worked with galleries both in the United States and abroad and would be able to direct photographers to venues that might be interested in their projects.
