Vu Photo, Quebec, QC, Canada
Alexis Desgagnés is the artistic director of VU PHOTO, an artists-run center that since 1981 has been dedicated to the development of the photographic image. It's mission is to cultivate public interest in contemporary visual art. The center offers a varied program of activities such as exhibitions, public talks and visits to its facilities. VU also provides artists and its members with access to its production equipment for digital and analog photography. The centre supports emerging practices and promotes critical thinking about the issues in contemporary photography. To do so, it regularly receives artists in creative residencies and is active in the publishing field. VU also has a documentation center where researchers and students can find a large collection of volumes on contemporary photography. VU is a non-profit organization made up of and administered by an artists' collective. Its board of directors is composed of artists and professionals in the visual arts. The centre is a member of the Méduse cooperative in Quebec City.
Behind photography herself, Alexis Desgagnés is interested in discovering powerful images that show strong and original point of view on contemporary social, political, cultural and aesthetic issues. His primary interest is photobook projects, as well as exhibiting conceptual, experimental, new documentary and new topographic photography. Photographers should present a portfolio of actual prints and/or photobooks, but must avoid screen-based presentations. Alexis Desgagnés is not interested in seeing commercial or fashion photography.
