Gallerist, Teacher and Photographer
Davis Orton Gallery, Hudson, NY, USA
Karen Davis is Co-director and Owner of the Davis Orton Gallery in Hudson, New York. The gallery, entering its fifth year, exhibits photography, mixed media and photobooks by emerging, mid-career and established artists. Exhibitions also showcase the portfolios of two additional photographers selected through competition. To see the range of work shown, visit the gallery’s website.
Karen teaches at the Griffin Museum of Photography and the Davis Orton Gallery. She has taught the popular “Photography Atelier,” portfolio development class; “Making Art in Word and Image;” and “Marketing Your Fine Arts Photography” courses at the Griffin, Art Institute of Boston/Lesley University; Lesley Seminars, Radcliffe Seminars, New England School of Art and Design and Tufts University’s Xcollege.
Her photographs are in the collections of the Center for Photography at Woodstock (CPW), the Samuel Dorsky Museum, Lishui Museum of Photography (China) and are featured at MASS MoCA and the Boston Drawing Project. Her books are in the artist book collection of the Houghton Rare Books Library, Harvard University and the Lishui Museum of Photography. In 2009 she received the CPW Artist Fellowship Award and is a NYFA MARK 2011 artist.
As programmer/curator for the Davis Orton Gallery, she is interested in reviewing a wide range of photographic topics and processes which reflects her gallery’s broad view and would be delighted to encounter potential exhibitors for her gallery. That said, since nudes, commercial and stock photography are less likely to be featured in the gallery, she would prefer not to review these. She is glad to see work that is in progress or complete bodies of work. She can offer guidance on portfolio development and finding an audience. She has been a portfolio reviewer at FotoFest, Photolucida, PRC/Griffin Museum Portfolio Review and Critical Mass.
