Mary Virginia Swanson
Tucson, AZ, USA
Mary Virginia Swanson makes it her goal to help photographers find the strengths in their work and identify appreciative audiences for their prints, exhibitions, and licensing placements. Her informative seminars and educational lectures on marketing opportunities have proven to aid photographers in moving their careers to the next level. She is a sought-after portfolio reviewer at such events as FotoFest, Photolucida, and PhotoNOLA, among others. In 2011, Photograph Magazine’s “In Profile” column highlighted Swanson’s diverse career, having been involved with presenting, publishing, and licensing fine art imagery for over 20 years. Ms. Swanson currently works individually with photographers as a marketing consultant to guide artists in their careers; she also serves as an advisor to many arts organizations. Swanson maintains a popular blog about opportunities for photographers called Marketing Photos and contributes articles on marketing to numerous publications including British Journal of Photography and PDN.
Swanson's latest title is “Finding Your Audience: An Introduction to Marketing Your Photographs” (2013). She coauthored “Publish Your Photography Book” (2011; second Edition due Spring 2014) with Darius Himes.
Ms. Swanson is pleased to advise participating artists on what markets, particularly within the US, are most likely to respond positively to their imagery. In addition to viewing examples of final prints, she encourages those who meet with her to bring samples of marketing materials they are currently utilizing to promote themselves and mock-ups of catalogues or monographs that are in the planning stage. Lastly, sharing your website during your session will allow her to advise on its effectiveness in presenting your work to desired collectors, collecting institutions, and others.
