Design Director and Commission Editor
Thames & Hudson Publishers, London, United Kingdom
Johanna Neurath is Design Director and also a Commissioning Editor at Thames & Hudson. With the creative bookmaking and publishing operating out of London, Thames & Hudson is one of the world’s most respected art, design and photography book publishers and has a truly international outlook, publishing for book lovers in all five continents.
She has worked in illustrated book publishing for 25 years as a picture editor, book and jacket designer, art director and commissioning editor. Collaborating with many authors, photographers, artists and curators, Johanna guides them through the visual and practical aspects of the publishing process, making sure their ideas are successfully realized in a well-designed finished book that resonates with the subject matter and its potential audience.
When not making books, or helping others to do the same, she is an active member of the London street photography community. She is a regular portfolio reviewer at Les Rencontres d’Arles; the Format Photo Festival, UK; Stockholm Photography Week; Fotografiska Museum, Kolga Tblisi Photofestival in Georgia; and the British Journal of Photography's "Vision" event. In London she has led practical workshops on bookmaking for photographers, and was invited by D&AD to be on the Jury for best Book Design in 2012 their 50th anniversary year.
She is interested in all genres of photography, but does not wish to see nude or stock photography. In very exceptional circumstances she may help a photographer or author propose a book project to Thames & Hudson or one of its co-publishing partners.
Johanna can be most constructive in offering advice on editing and sequencing work, giving design tips for photographers, guidance on how and *when* to put a book proposal together for a publisher - or advising on things to watch out for when self publishing.
